The UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) establishes seven core principles for processing personal data. These principles ensure that personal data is handled lawfully, fairly, and transparently. The principles are: lawfulness, fairness, and transparency; purpose limitation; data minimisation; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality (security); and accountability.
7 core principles:
Lawfulness, Fairness, and Transparency:
Processing data must be lawful under the UK GDPR, fair to the individual, and transparent about how the data is used.
Purpose Limitation:
Data can only be used for the purposes for which it was originally collected, and not for any incompatible purposes.
Data Minimisation:
Only collect and process data that is adequate, relevant, and limited to what is necessary for the intended purpose.
Accuracy:
Data must be accurate and kept up-to-date, and any inaccuracies must be rectified without delay.
Storage Limitation:
Data should not be kept for longer than necessary, and should be securely erased or deleted when no longer needed.
Integrity and Confidentiality (Security):
Data must be protected through appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure its confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Accountability:
Organisations must demonstrate compliance with the UK GDPR and take responsibility for data protection practices.
In the UK, organisations found to be in violation of the GDPR can face fines of up to £17.5 million or 4% of their annual global turnover, whichever is greater. This penalty is for serious breaches of the data protection principles. The ICO also has the power to issue warnings, reprimands, and temporary or definitive bans on processing.
